2001, A Third World Odyssey (2017)

for recorder, voice, and live electronics

performed by the amazing swiss duo UMS n’ JIP

recorder, Ulrike Mayer-Spohn
voice, Javier Hagen

Brief Notes:

While in Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” the first year of the twenty first century promised supercomputer’s taking control of a spaceship that communicated through video cameras, in “2001, A Third World Odyssey” we witness a fax machine, a sonic marker of the former dictator Alberto Fujimori resigning the presidency over fax. The link to these two is established by the hallucinogenic salsa rendition of Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra, by the salsa orchestra of Fujimori’s congressman Delgado Aparicio. This piece serves as a critique of peruvian pseudo-modernity always achieved in these absurd ways through the sonic markers of the year 2001.
