La Coupure (1989-2000) by James Dillon was premiered at IRCAM in Paris, France in 2001. The piece received two more performances immediately following its premiere and then remained dormant until the present day. The intricate technology involved in mounting the piece inhibited future performances. In late 2009, Steven Schick proposed a collaborative resurrection of the piece. James Dillon visited San Diego’s Conrad Prebys Music Center for two, week-long residencies where a variety of options were tested and manipulated. In the end, Ross Karre, William Brent, and I recreated the entire sound and video design for the piece using open source technology and readily available hardware.
